No Child left Behind – Demonstration & Rally
(PRWEB) April 20, 2005
Black Londoners will be coming together to demonstrate to political parties, before the May 5th General Election, that black communities want more commitment to combating racism in the current education system if they want their vote.
The demonstration will:
·Raise the profile of Black pupils educational needs and place them on a political agenda
·Encourage parents to develop visible leadership and speak out against the inequalities that exists in the education system
·Call on black community leaders and faith leaders to organise, mobilise and participate in direct action to highlight the concerns we have around the education of our children
·Demonstrate to our children the importance and value we place on their education
·Highlight of the issue of inequalities that exist in the current education system
·Demand high expectations, high standards and high performance from our educational establishments
·Demand a reduction in the number of school exclusions
·Demand support for supplementary schools and education projects
·Insist Local Education Authorities (LEAÂs) develop a wider range of curriculum material that provides positive images of Black people (not just as part of Black History Month).
Dawn Stephenson, Director of the Black Londoners Forum, comments: ÂIn reality, government policies over the past twenty years are incompatible with social and racial equality. The result has been the devastation of education provision in inner city areas, under-investment and increasing privatisation. The setting up of new academies in private hands is likely to be dominated by the rich, as are grammar schools. This does not bode well for the future of Black children. It is time to raise the profile of Black pupils educational needs and place them on a political agenda. It will also encourage parents to develop visible leadership and speak out against the inequalities that exists in the education system.Â
